My Wiener mobile app

Viewing active and inactive policies, receiving notifications about the expiration of policies, the possibility of contracting travel and supplementary health insurance as well as claim notification are just some of what My Wiener application allows users to do.

It was created as part of a strategy to digitize business and modernize client support and in order to provide them with maximum user-friendly experience and not have to manually enter data required to register or purchase a new insurance policy, Wiener decided to upgrade the application and provide clients with data scanning.

Mobile scanning and ID cards OCR

In order to improve the user experience, speed up and facilitate the process of contracting and downloading services within the My Wiener application, an integrated component for mobile scanning and automatic reading of data (OCR) from ID cards issued in the Republic of Croatia has been developed.

Without the need for physical contact with the insurer’s representative, through automatic reading of data from the identification document, there is eliminated manual entry of data such as:

  • name and surname
  • Croatian personal identification number (OIB)
  • date of birth
  • date of issuance of the identity card.
Since it is an application for clients, this solution primarily affects them and their satisfaction, and thus the reflection of Wiener as their insurer. We believe that this solution has greatly contributed to the value and efficiency of the My Wiener application and ultimately to the user experience.

Rapid development and support - the key to project success

The project included two key phases – delivery of the mobile scanning component and OCR, and support to the Wiener mobile team in integrating new functionalities into the My Wiener application, for all business scenarios that require personal data.

After defining all user needs, a detailed specification of the solution was developed in accordance with which started the development of the mobile scanning and OCR component according to the specifics of the Wiener insurance business process.

In addition to the installation of the necessary background components on the end-user infrastructure, a sample example of integration with the mobile component and a technical specification for the mobile application development team were provided, which provided full support throughout the integration and testing process.

According to the requirements specification, two variants of the mobile scanning component and OCR ID cards were developed and delivered to meet both iOS and Android mobile operating systems.

Maximum accuracy in all ID card versions

In the Republic of Croatia there are several different versions of identity cards in use. So, at the same time, there are several valid versions of the document whose appearance differs from each other in several details. In order for the scan to always be successful and the user experience to remain intact, it is necessary to cover all valid versions and details by which they differ.

The document size, appearance and layout of the data on the ID card are key parameters in the process of automatic reading of data from the document, so special attention is paid to adjusting the OCR so that the component successfully loads data from all current versions of ID cards.
